Snail Walk

I just got back from vacation at Cape Cod. It was a lot of nature walks and beach time for us as it usually is. A great time to refresh and be out in nature.

Every year when we go (I don't know probably for the last few years), we always go to the beach and we do this kinda snail walk. It all started when my husband found this Elephant Snail on a rock when we were at the beach and jokingly gifted it to me. I thought the little guy was cute and so I hung onto him as we walked down the beach. From there a tradition was born.

I find it kinda fun and I thought someone else might like to try it, especially if you have kids. I'm a kid at heart and a big nature lover.

How it works

It's really nothing complicated or wierd (well at least I don't think so). You go for a walk during low tide. We usually go to bay side beaches at the Cape. As you walk you will find countless snails. Pick one up and put it in your wet hand. Continue on your walk. Usually snails are pretty active (at least at first) and will come out of its shell and move around. I love it because it tickles. You can continue to add snails as you go or just stick with the one. I find sticking with only one or a few, they tend to be more active. Also make sure to keep your hand wet. Different snails will react differently. Some will suction more to your hand while others are more likely to fall because they startle more and hide in their shell.

If you would prefer, you can just carry the snails in a shell as well. I like watching them move around, but my favorite part is when they tickle my hand as they move about.

My husband usually picks out the snails for me as I walk. He too will sometimes carry a snail or two. He mostly likes taking snails from a spot that's too dry and throwing them back into the water "saving their life". And, yes we checked, they survive this man-handling.

So if this is something you have never tried before I encourage you to try it at least once, It can be fun.
