A Week Away: Movie Review

I ended up watching this movie on my birthday. My new tradition on my birthday is to spend the day at home with some good food, my favorite dog in the whole world, Cody, and watch a Christian movie. Last year I watched War Room. This year I watched the Netflix original A Week Away, starring Bailee Madison and Kevin Quinn. I absolutely love discovering new actors that Christians in Hollywood. I applaud them for persevering and navigating the rather prejudice field that Hollywood can be.

I was a little worried that this movie might be kinda lame, but I thought, hey why not? I used to love watching those teen musicals growing up. So I gave it a shot and I was not disappointed. It had a good message and good music. I was delighted when I recognized a couple of songs and got to sing along. I think they also poked a little fun at how unrealistic musicals can be to the real world and how over-the-top the songs can go when the lead male actor, Will, gets to camp and everyone breaks out into song. The Will's reaction is kinda like "What is going on?"

Generally the movie is about the lead character, Will, is a troubled kid who lost his parents. His last resort before jail time is to go to this camp. There he meets Avery and is instantly smitten with her. He doesn't tell anyone about his past and he lies and tells everyone he is a Christian so he can fit in. The campers go though a bunch of fun games and competitions to try and get there team to win. All the while romance blooms among the campers and some jealousy. Overall, it's very mild in drama which is refreshing in my opinion.

I truly enjoyed the storyline and the activities they did. It reminded me of my days at camp. I wouldn't say it's over the top and pushy about Christianity - by that I mean preachy - which made it kinda nice but it shows Christians as we are. We are normal: caring, forgiving, trying to do our best, especially when we are teen Christians, and so on.

I definitely recommend this movie - unless you don't like musicals, which my husband does not. It is a great movie and great alternative to High School Musical. I was surprised it was a Netflix original movie, but I thought is was well done. I hope they make another one.
