Foiling: Stained Glass Jewelry Part 3

Foiling is the next step and it’s rather simple, but crucial to the process. Solder doesn’t stick to glass but it sticks to copper. The foil is a copper tape that you place around the edge of your glass. It’s important to pick a good width for what you are doing. Small pieces need to have the smallest width possible to get around the edges so that it doesn’t cover up too much of the glass design while large pieces can afford wider tape. The pitfall of using thinner tape is you run the risk of it being less sturdy.

Once you have your foil picked out, you simply take it and measure it around your piece. Make sure to overlap some, but not too much.

Peel off the backing to get the sticky part. Depending on how big your piece is, you might want to peel as you go so the long sticky tape doesn’t catch on anything. Make sure it is as centered as possible as you begin to wrap it around your piece.

Once the piece is wrapped, use your fingers to push down the edges so everything lays smooth. You can buy specific tools like the one (see picture to the side) I use to work out any kinks, but I imagine you can use anything similar. Don’t use anything that is sharp and could rip the tape.

That’s it! So simple, but so crucial because without it you couldn’t solder anything to it. And I cannot stress enough the importance of the tape keeping its stickiness. Don’t redo and redo trying wrap the tape around the glass.

Tomorrow we will look at soldering which is the best step because it brings everything together and you get to see your beautiful creation come to life.
